Fred Knight - Sheriff
Fred Knight was elected to the office as Sheriff of Marlboro County and began serving in January 2005. Sheriff Knight is a veteran law enfocement agent. He is retired from the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and has more than thirty years of law enforcement experience.
His first position in law enforcement began in 1972 with the Cheraw Police Department. He was named Police Officer of the year in 1974. Fred joined SLED in 1976 where he remained until he retired as a lieutenant in 1996.
Fred was born in Marlboro County in 1950, the son of David Knight, who was also a law enforcement agent and retired as Marlboro County's resident SLED agent in 1975.
Sheriff Knight previously stated "Law enforcement is a serious and important tradition in my family. Every law enforcement agent has a solemn duty to be fair, just, and give honest citizens the sense of security in their homes and communities."
When running for office he said "As Sheriff, I pledge to restore integrity, professionalism and reliability to the position. I have spent over thirty years protecting innocent people and locking up criminals. I will use my experience to ensure that families in Marlboro County have confidence in those sworn to protect them."
Sheriff Knight and his wife, Kay, are active members of Christ United Methodist Church. They have three children: Harris, Joseph, and Jake.
